This hurricane heading our way.
The replacement trees after the 1987 storm (some of which I planted, actually) are just big enough now to be blown down. Makes you feel a bit insignificant in the long term.

But for the route of the hurricane hitting a different part of the country. The storm thirty years ago hit the South East but this one coming looks to be heading for the North west.

Decided at the last minute to drive down to lands end with the old man...pugged up in a 2 man tent as I type this...winds already picked up somewhat!

Ireland will cop the strongest winds nothing to worry about here.

Re: This hurricane heading our way.
I'm up in Londonderry at the moment and it's not too windy yet. The weather warnings all seem to kick in around 10 am.

Might take the day off and drive out to the north-west coast to see how bad it is.

That storm in 87 was something. We were lucky to be on the same power grid as the local hospital so got power back the same day but went to play a pool match three weeks later in a small village and they had candles around the table!!!

I understand it’s actually an ex-hurricane
Ex-hurricane Ophelia

Presume it’s God that is aiming it at Northern Ireland
That’s how he rolls innit?

Didn't Michael Fish say there was nothing to worry about, ted?

I love it that Michael Fish is now coming out with a load of bollocks saying that he was talking about a lady referring to a hurricane in Florida. The video shows him going on to say that it will be a bit windy in the UK!

Re: This hurricane heading our way.
I heard that Fish interview . What a miserable old cunt he's become.

First of all, he claims it wasn't his fault because he was only paraphrasing what other people had written for him. Even though the Beeb have for decades bragged that their weathermen were proper meteorologists who knew exactly what they were talking about, not just autocue readers like the other channels employed.

Then he admits that the lady who phoned up was a load of made-up bollocks.

Then he whines about what a hard time the press gave him, when in fact, as anyone old enough to have been there will recall, the press just teased him a little (more laughing with him than at him) as he was a much-loved figure at the time.

I worked at Kew Gardens back in 87. Took a hammering as did it's sister gardens down in West Sussex, Wakehurst Place.

There were lots of Gardeners walking around with tears that day, but meanwhile in the Jodrell lab, all the Scientists were getting stiffys as they had a chance to examine the exposed root systems of the up turned tree's.

We went to the pub :-)

Re: This hurricane heading our way.
Michael Fish said it wasn't a hurricane but it would be windy.

That was entirely accurate in the end.

I was getting my end away with a squirter I met in Majorca.... left in the morning to find felled trees everywhere.... must admit I thought I put in a decent performance so sorry about the aftermath....

Only day in my entire school career that it was actually closed.

Nowadays they close for absolutely fucking everything the wet blankets.

Loved doing my paper round that morning, had my BMX up to about 50mph with the wind behind me.

In all seriousness... I didn't think it was that windy.... we just don't cope with weather in this country very well do we??

Re: This hurricane heading our way.
I was living half a mile from the coast in Sussex in '87.

There were houses with the roofs ripped clean off, fences flying around all over the place and general chaos.

Yeah, wasn't that windy....

That's right son, but fear not because now all our trees have been stuck down with superglue.

You plank.

Didn't Sevenoaks become Oneoak?

Re: This hurricane heading our way.
The British are unable to put things into perspective and moan about everything.

Yeah a few people died, some trees were down and some roofs missing in the 90mph winds in 87.

In reality it isn't that bad though in comparison to what those poor fuckers over the ocean sometimes have to put up with.

That beauty a few weeks ago was 150mph wasn't it or something ridiculous and it wasn't roofs being ripped off, it was entire towns.

Girls I work with today are moaning it's cold, when it is in fact about 20 degrees in the middle of October.
